Coronavirus Information

Some suggestions for older adults who are feeling nervous and isolated thru the closings and fear of Corona virus.  Also see our page on Coronavirus Updates

• During the #COVID19 concern please check on older relatives and neighbors
• Make sure they have enough groceries (see below)
  
• See if they if need help with medication
• Help them stay at home as much as possible
• Limit close contact if doable, but help them use technology to stay in touch
• Since your friends are feeling it too, reach out! Call your friends and neighbors just to check in or to just to have a good old-fashioned gabfest!
• Now is a good time to re-connect with old friends and family!  Pull out your little personal phone book or if you are on social media try looking up people you haven’t had time to check in on for some time.  How nice it is to hear from an old friend!
•  Pull out that box of old photos that you have meaning to organize. Your family members would probably enjoy seeing the old pictures of happy memories.  Plus, an added benefit is that you accomplished something on your to-do list while enjoying the memories. (Don’t forget to write who and when on the back so your family will not have to guess!) 
• If you are online use Skype or Face time to see and visit your friends and family!  
• Find a new show or movie on TV and tell your friends then have your own little “TV Club” and discuss it as if you were in a book club except over the phone or online.
• Remember that favorite recipe you use to make when you had more time?  Well now you have time! Enjoy!
• Look for the book you have been meaning to read, the crossword or jigsaw puzzle you thought you might do some day, or the craft project that is just sitting there.  Keep your brain sharp and avoid 24-hour news!
• Remember the art of writing letters? Now would be a great time to write to your grandchildren and let them experience the joy of receiving a letter.

 Assistance for Older Adults during Isolation
Thank you to all of you who have offered assistance for shopping while we all face the realities of isolation during the social distancing and confinement.  We do have a program, Home Friends, that has existed for over 20 years from 55 Kip Center that provides assistance throughout the year to seniors so that they can stay independently in their homes. However, this is a volunteer program and many of our Home Friend volunteers are themselves over 60, therefore, your offer of help is greatly appreciated.  If you are an older adult and need assistance in the Rutherford area or if you would just like a friendly phone call to check in on you, please contact 55 Kip Center at 201-460-1600.  If you would like more information about this program, offering your services, or signing up someone for assistance please contact Cathy Baviello at [email protected] The longer this crisis prevails the more seniors will be needing assistance.
